Mandibular range of motion scales document a patient's range of motion. The normal range of motion is between 40 mm and 60 mm. At a minimum, every patient's comfort, active, and passive range of motion measurements should be recorded as part of an annual patient exam. If there is ever an issue with a patient's opening, the healthy baseline is critical to know so they can hopefully regain their range of motion to their baseline. This takes 15 minutes and costs 8 cents. We sell these at our cost since there should be no barriers to incorporating this procedure into every new and annual patient exam. Dr. Rich Hirschinger, a board-certified orofacial pain specialist, invented the gentle jaw. It is a passive jaw-stretching device for jaw pain, TMJ, and tension-type headaches. It can also help reduce the number of migraine headaches, but it is not a cure for migraine. It is used for 30 seconds every couple of hours. The gentle jaw is "yoga for the jaw."
